How Many Americans Are Swiping Their Way To A Happy Holiday Season?

The 2015 holiday shopping season is now in full swing, and U.S. consumers have already begun celebrating the season by swiping their credit cards left and right. Black Friday and Cyber Monday mark the beginning of a spending frenzy like none other, and a large number of spenders are relying on credit cards to make sure that travel, gifts, food and events are extra special this time of year.

The numbers

A recent Harris poll focused on exactly how much Americans use credit cards to make it through the holiday season. According to Harris, 65% of Americans use credit cards for at least some of their holiday spending. In addition, a third (33%) of those polled revealed that they make more holiday purchases with credit cards than they do with cash and debit cards combined. Furthermore, 15% of holiday shoppers say they use credit cards exclusively for everything they buy for the holidays.

Surprisingly, use of credit cards for holiday spending seems to increase with age. Harris found that 54% of Matures age 70+ do all or most of their holiday spending on credit cards, more than Baby Boomers (43%), Gen Xers (27%) and Millennials (18%).
